Walker says winning another Brier is “surreal” and sharing the record for career wins is “very cool”

Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker says it is surreal to be a Brier champion for the sixth time in his curling career.

Walker and his teammates on the Brad Gushue team won the Brier Sunday, beating Saskatchewan 9-5 in the final played Sunday in Regina.

“You get that first one and, you know, it’s just amazing, (a) huge accomplishment, something you’ve dreamt of and then it just seems, all of a sudden, now we’re at number 6, which is hard to imagine… hard to really fathom.”

“It was a pretty special week.”

The sixth title means Walker and teammates Brad Gushue and Mark Nichols are now tied with Alberta’s Randy Ferby for the most Briers won in a career.

Walker says sharing this record is “very cool.”

“(It’s) something that you obviously don’t think is really realistic when you first start playing.”

“To be up there now with Randy and obviously Mark and Brad to have the most Brier wins is still hard to put into words and hard to imagine that that actually is a thing.”

We asked Walker what it was like to be playing the home team in front of the loud crowd that was on hand for the game.

“You know what? They were very respectful. There were obviously a lot of people there still cheering for us. It was a little bit different not having probably the majority of the crowd on our side, but it was a really good atmosphere. It was great both ways. They cheered our shots as well and it was a really fun environment to play in.”

They will again be Team Canada at the World Men’s Curling Championship.

Walker says they will fly out March 25. They will not be together again as a team before then because of the quick turnaround and everybody’s personal schedules. They will practice for three days once they arrive.

The World Men’s starts March 30 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
