Cedar Point has been picked as the name for the Coordinated Care Campus supportive living facility located in the old Stonebridge Hotel.

Grande Prairie City Council approved the new name at Monday’s meeting.

Councillor Grant Berg was part of a committee tasked with coming up with the new name.

He says about 20 names were first considered.

“We discussed a variety of different trees because they’re rooted, they’re strong, they are shaped by the weather, but they’re resilient.”

“When we were discussing different trees, cedar was a natural one. It is used in smudging. It is hardy. It’s a beautiful tree.”

The other two finalists were Mosaic Lodge and Grande Hope Landing.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says having a new name for the Coordinated Care Campus had been under discussion for a while.

“What it actually is, is a coordinated care campus, but that was not the intent to keep the name. So now through consultation with the committee, three names were brought back to council and council settled on Cedar Point.”

Clayton says there were some changes made during the construction process.

“Initially, the intent was (to) have the residents live in the hotel rooms. Through renovations, it was recognized that it would be better utilized to renovate and have the configuration somewhat differently.”

“You will see shortly online where you can see images inside the facility and really get a feel for it.”

Clayton says service provider The Mustard Seed has a grand opening planned for April 19.

Some city departments recently started moving to this location from City on 99 downtown.
