City hoping to get grant for fire prevention work

City Hall is hoping to do some more fire prevention work if a grant application to the Forest Improvement Association of Alberta’s Community Fireguard Program is approved.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says GIS data the city already ahs would be used to make a map showing vegetation density.

“This map will be used to establish a wildland-urban interface priority list, so, prioritizing areas for residents and for our municipality in regards to fire-smarting.”

Clayton says the city would provide gift-in-kind support along with any funding, should that funding be approved.

She adds this grant would be for what she calls “first phase funding.”

“And with that, there is a significant amount of gift-in-kind the city will be providing, along with any funding that we receive.”

The city was given a grant by this same organization last year to remove dead trees and other potential fuel for fires in the South Bear Creek area.

Council passed a motion supporting the application at its meeting on April 8.
