Alberta Summer Games Torch Relay impacts on traffic
Motorists in Grande Prairie should keep traffic changes and facility hours in mind while the Alberta Summer Games take over the next few days.
The Torch Relay takes place at 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 18). It starts at Evergreen Park and goes to Muskoseepi Park.
“It is a really exciting kick-off for the next couple of days,” said Blair Wade, City Communications Advisor.
Runners will go north on Resources Road, turn west on 97 Avenue, and continue north on 102 Street. They will end at Muskoseepi Park. Although there are no full closures expected, a northbound lane on Resources Road will be closed for the event. There will also be temporary intersection closures as a runner goes through.
Triathlon events take place on Saturday and Sunday. From 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., athletes will be travelling from the Eastlink Centre, east on 68 Avenue, north on 100 Street to 75 Avenue, and then continue back around to the start point.
The westbound lanes of 68 Avenue will be closed and the eastbound lanes will be used as single lane traffic in both directions. Southbound lanes on 100 Street will be closed while the northbound lanes will be open to single lane traffic in both directions. Traffic will be rerouted around the Kateri Drive and 68 Avenue intersection. Anyone who lives in the Bear Creek Condos will have volunteers to help people to access their lots.
Police cars will be noticed along the routes as well.
The Eastlink Centre will be used for the event which will result in changes in the hours it is accessible to the public. Hours can be found on the Eastlink Centre or City of Grande Prairie website. Parking near and access to the Coca Cola Centre may be minimized.
