Local events vying for tourism funding
Two local events are vying for their chunk of the city’s Large Scale Tourism Funding program.
For the second year, the City of Grande Prairie has made $200,000 available for events that bring people into the region. The Bear Creek Folk Festival has asked for $100,000.
Producer Sarah Card says this year will be “make or break” for the event.
“It is always a challenge to get an event like this off the ground. Although, this year is our strongest year in terms of public support and sponsorships,” said Card.
Last year, the festival received money under the same program.
Grande Prairie Stompede is hoping to get $75,000. President Trevor Denis says they are working to keep the event fresh and sustainable.
In order to be considered for the money, there are criteria that need to be met including 35 per cent of attendees traveling from 100 kilometres away or more.
City Council is on a break and will talk about the funds at their next meeting on August 13.
