Construction work coming to downtown Lethbridge at month’s end

Business owners and residents in downtown are advised of upcoming construction work in the area. The City of Lethbridge says work will begin the week of May 27, 2024.

A summary of the planned activities is as follows:

• 7 Street South: 5 Avenue to 6 Avenue
  • Parking area upgrades and resurfacing: Crews will start asphalt resurfacing work of two angle parking areas on 7 Street immediately south of the 5 Avenue intersection on May 28. Work will include the addition of a new accessible parking stall ramp on the east side of the road and changes to accessible ramps at the intersection of 5 Avenue to accommodate bicycle traffic. This is expected to take about one week to finish, weather depending.
  • Pavement line painting and protected cycling lane block installation: This work is scheduled for early to mid-June and will be coordinated with other pavement marking projects across Lethbridge. Officials say the scope of work includes the addition of green “sharrows” on the road indicating a shared driving lane for bicycles and motor vehicles as well as the installation of parking stall lines. This part of work is expected to be finished within one to two days on the block and will have minimal impact on daily activities. Those in the area are asked to anticipate a temporary road closure in the immediate area of the work while it is happening.
• 7 Street South: 4 Avenue to 5 Avenue
  • Wheelchair ramp addition. This is scheduled for the week of May 27. Officials say this could lead to minor parking interruptions in the immediate work area.
  • Pavement line painting and protected cycling lane block installation. This project is scheduled for early to mid-June. The City says it will be carried out concurrently with similar pavement marking projects and is anticipated to be done within one to two days on the block. Officials note it will have minimal impact on daily activities. There will be a temporary road closure in the immediate area during the work.
• 7 Street South: 3 Avenue to 4 Avenue
  • Wheelchair ramp – enhancements are planned for the accessible parking stall ramp on 7 Street South adjacent to the CIBC. The City says the aim is to ensure the ramp fully meets constructions and accessibility standards. The work is scheduled for the week of May 27. Residents and businesses can expect minor parking adjustments and a sidewalk detour in the immediate area.
  • Repair work – minor repair work is required in the parking area adjacent to the former Scotiabank building. The interruption should be minor, according to the City and is only expected to take a few hours. This work is scheduled to take place at some point during the week of May 27, near the end of the week.
