Trial dates set after death of baby in High Prairie

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for the woman charged after the death of a baby in High Prairie.

The trial for Kyra Renee Backs will be held from January 6-25, 2025, in Peace River Court of King’s Bench.

Backs was charged with murder after a seven-month-old infant died on October 6, 2022.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time of her arrest that Backs had been running a day home.

One of two men charged after church fire pleads guilty

Alberta Justice says one of the two men charged after a suspicious church fire in Grouard in May of last year has pleaded guilty.

Kenneth Ferguson pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter to commit theft May 21 in Peace River court, the same day a four day trial for Ferguson and co-accused Gerald Capot was to start.

Ferguson was given 90 days in jail, time served, plus one year probation.

He had also been facing a charge of arson.

The two were arrested after a fire on May 22, 2023, in St. Bernard Catholic Church in Grouard.

The Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan said it was built in 1902 and was the oldest church in the area.

Capot is due back in court August 30.

Jail time after flight from police guilty plea

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a flight from police incident from January of 2023 in Grande Prairie has been given jail time after pleading guilty.

Richard Jason Fabbi pleaded guilty to four of the 19 charges he had been facing, including flight from a police officer, operating a vehicle while prohibited, and two charges of failure to comply with a release order.

He was given a 36-month sentence in Edmonton court. He was given 721 days credit for time already spent in custody, leaving 374 days to serve.

Fabbi and another man were arrested on January 29, 2023.

Grande Prairie RCMP say a vehicle sped away from an attempted traffic stop at 100 Avenue and 96 Street just after 8 p.m. that day. Police had been targeting drivers of suspicious vehicles that took off from traffic stops.

Mounties did not give chase but kept an eye on the vehicle from the air. Once the vehicle stopped, Air Services relayed the location to police on the ground who were then able to make arrests.

Charges of failure to comply with a probation order and possession of a controlled substance against the other man, Reece Mackenzie Babik, were earlier withdrawn.
