Some projects in northwestern Alberta are among 43 across the province sharing $3.2 million in funding under the provincial government’s Small Community Opportunity Program.

The province says in a release this program is meant to stimulate economic growth in smaller communities.

The list includes $90,000 for the Village of Hines Creek to hire an economic development officer.

Northern Sunrise County is getting $71,748 to make and promote a trail system map for hiking, biking, quadding, cross country skiing, and other activities to attract visitors.

Mackenzie County will use $87,132 to “explore and develop” irrigation based on what the province calls “building on early adopters’ knowledge and experience.”

“Mackenzie County has been exploring ways to expand irrigation initiatives to strengthen and diversify our agriculture sector. The Small Community Opportunity Program grant will enable us to continue this work and build on early irrigation adopters’ knowledge and experiences to advance economic development in the county,” – Mackenzie County Reeve Josh Knelsen

There is $75,436 going to the Willmore Wilderness Preservation and Historical Foundation to promote the Willmore Wilderness Park as a tourism destination.

There is another $90,000 going to the La Crete Area Chamber of Commerce to put up an interactive digital billboard.

Community Futures Lesser Slave Lake Region will use $90,000 training, coaching and workforce development for businesses.

Dene Tha’ First Nation will use $90,000 to train and hire workers for a community greenhouse and aquaponics facility in Chateh.

This money was included in the province’s 2023-24 budget. Applications opened last November and closed in January.
