Wildfire hazard moderate in PRFA, Alberta wildfire pace this year behind last year, five-year average

Jul 4, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The wildfire hazard is listed as moderate in the Peace River Forest Area.

It currently has one fire listed as being held. It is located about 35 kilometres north of Manning and has burned around 160 hectares.

There are four other fires that are listed as under control.

Since January 1, the Peace River Forest Area has had 48 fires that have burned just over 300 hectares. Of the 48 fires, 17 were started by lightning.

Alberta’s Forest Protection Area has had 582 fires that have burned 36,351 hectares since the start of 2024.

Last year at this time, there had been 786 fires that burned 2,009,019 hectares.

The five year average for this time in July is 603 fires and 573,570 hectares burned.

Fire watchers continue to ask people to use caution with campfires and to use the soak it-stir it-soak it again method to make sure it is out.

They are also asking people to be careful when using off-highway vehicles in the forest and to not fly drones near wildfires as this can ground airborne fire fighting operations.
