Most Peace Country crops still in good shape says new provincial crop report

The July 2 crop report from AFSC says that 74.9 per cent of the Peace region crop was rated in good to excellent condition as of that date.

That is down from the 79.5 per cent rating in the crop report from the week before.

The breakdown by crop is 85.8 per cent for spring wheat, 83.9 per cent for barley, 83.1 per cent for oats, 70.7 per cent for dry peas and 65.9 per cent for canola.

The five-year average for July 2 is 65 per cent, the 10-year average is 65.5 per cent.

Across Alberta, 74.8 per cent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Surface soil moisture in the Peace was rated 88.5 per cent good to excellent while sub surface moisture was rated 91.4 per cent good to excellent.

Pasture growth was 72.8 per cent good to excellent and tame hay growth was 72 per cent in those two categories combined.

First cut haying had been at six per cent complete as of July 2.
