Town of Jasper left charred by wildfire

Jul 25, 2024 | 12:57 PM

A “wall of flames” is what Premier Danielle Smith used Thursday morning to describe devastating images being shared on social media after a wildfire roared through the Town of Jasper on Wednesday evening.

Smith broke down on the podium speaking to the world as people patiently awaited news of what still stands in the historic and charming mountain town.

She says it is not fully known how much is left standing in Jasper.

“We are potentially seeing 30 to 50 per cent structural damage.”

The Premier says from a briefing on the ground Wednesday night from Parks Canada and Alberta Wildfire that the situation was “extremely volatile.”

“Let me assure you that Alberta is doing all that we can.”

Smith also expressed gratitude for the men and women on the frontline fighting the still out-of-control wildfire that continues to ravage through the dense forest.

Parks Canada tweeted on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. that it is “impossible to share information about specific locations and the extent of damage at this time.”
