Alberta Crop Report says heatwave affected canola and peas

Jul 29, 2024 | 8:17 AM

Crop conditions as of July 23, were released on Friday by AGI and the provincial government.

The major heatwave that settled over the entire province for a prolonged period did affect crops… for the worse. Conditions significantly declined around Alberta from 73 per cent good to excellent, to 55 per cent.

Current conditions around the province now are rated below the 5- and 10-year averages.

The report says that the true effects of the heatwave will not be known for a few more weeks.

In the Peace Region though, we received anywhere between 15 to 80 mm of rain between July 16-22.

The three consecutive weeks of dry heat interfered with canola and peas in the Peace Country, and even though we have the best sub-surface soil moisture in the province, conditions are still below historical averages.

Tame hay was also affected, with now 64 per cent rated good to excellent, whereas the week before was 71 per cent rated good to excellent. The heatwave and a lack of moisture could make second cut growth unable to regenerate in many areas.

The next Alberta Crop report will be released on July 30 by AFSC.
