Leadership race helps Alberta NDP to narrowly out-fundraise UCP in Q2

Jul 30, 2024 | 5:51 PM

A major membership drive during the Alberta NDP’s leadership race helped the party to surpass its fundraising goals.

Elections Alberta has released its latest reports for political party contributions.

In the second quarter of 2024, the New Democrats received a total of $1,252,056.18.

Naheed Nenshi, who was named party leader during this period, says the leadership race resulted in a growth of over 85,000 memberships.

“We had incredible engagement over the leadership campaign and that is translating directly into more people across the province looking to the Alberta NDP and seeing themselves reflected in its membership and path forward,” says Nenshi.

The governing United Conservative Party (UCP) saw people donate $1,242,103.13 in Q2, approximately $10,000 shy of the NDP’s total.

Year-to-date, however, the Conservatives easily defeated the official opposition in terms of fundraising with over $3.5 million compared to $2.26 million respectively.

In Lethbridge, an equal number of people donated to the UCP and NDP in the first six months of this year at 69.
