Dates set for preliminary hearing in murder case

Alberta Justice says preliminary hearing dates have been set for the accused in a murder at Horse Lake First Nation.

The hearing for Carmon Ferguson is set for January 25-27, 2025, in Grande Prairie court.

Beaverlodge RCMP said at the time on October 8, 2023, they got a call from EMS saying a man “injured under suspicious circumstances” was being taken to hospital.

The 47-year-old from Horse Lake later died from his injuries.

Ferguson was charged with second degree murder.

Time served for man arrested after flight from traffic stop

Alberta Justice says a man charged after the driver of a vehicle took off from an attempted traffic stop was given 240 days, time served after pleading guilty to four charges.

Malcolm Testawits admitted to operating a vehicle while prohibited, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fraudulent concealment and failure to comply with a release order on the same day he was to stand trial in late June in Peace River court.

Three other charges, including flight from a peace officer and failure to comply, were withdrawn.

Testawits had built up enough credit for pre-trial time spent in custody to cover the 240 day sentence.

Fairview RCMP said on February 15, 2023, they tried to pull over a vehicle, but the driver took off.

That same vehicle later went off the road and down an embankment.

Time served for one accused caught in a stolen truck

Alberta Justice says one of two people caught riding in a stolen truck in Falher has been given a sentence of 90 days time served.

Clifford Carifelle had been facing a charge of possession of property obtained by crime, plus multiple firearms and failure to comply with a release order charges.

Possession of property obtained by crime and firearms charges against co-accused Danielle Buggins were dismissed.

RCMP said at the time on October 19, 2023, members saw two people get out of the truck and go into a business in Falher.

Mounties later searched the vehicle and found a loaded firearm, ammunition and other weapons.

Charges against second accused in stolen property case dismissed

Alberta Justice says charges against one of the two people charged after a stolen property investigation turned up several firearms have been dismissed.

Chassity Christine Horseman had been facing multiple firearms and property obtained by crime charges.

Back in March, co-accused Curtis Wieshlow pleaded guilty to a pair of firearms charges and was given a sentence of 300 days, time served in jail.

They were both arrested in March of 2022.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time a 911 hang up call led them to a hotel, where police believed they saw what they described as “an unsecured firearm” inside a room.

Two people were arrested. A search of the room turned up four firearms, ammunition, watches, cell phones, and tools, among other things.

Mounties believed a lot of the items had been stolen.
