M.D. of Spirit River considering at-large voting system

Aug 8, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The Municipal District of Spirit River is looking at a change in how its councillors are elected.

Council has given first reading to a bylaw that would see the M.D. go from a ward system to an at-large voting system.

There would still be four council members.

The M.D. says in a release posted on its website that council can go ahead and approve this bylaw unless enough people sign a petition demanding a vote on the idea, as is outlined in the Municipal Government Act.

The deadline to file a petition is October 21.

The Municipal Government Act requires that anyone filing a petition must be an elector in the M.D of Spirit River and the petition must be signed by at least 10 per cent of the population.
