Sinner advances to NBO Montreal quarterfinal with win over Tabilo

Aug 10, 2024 | 3:33 PM

MONTREAL — Top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy has advanced to the National Bank Open quarterfinal with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Saturday.

Tabilo, despite representing Chile, was born in Toronto. No Canadians remain in the men’s singles tournament — or the women’s singles in Toronto.

Sinner will play No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia on Saturday night at IGA Stadium for a spot in the men’s semifinal.

Several players are competing twice on Saturday after remnants of tropical storm Debby rained out the tournament’s entire session Friday.

Former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori of Japan defeated Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals, where he’ll play Matteo Arnaldi of Italy on Saturday night.

Sebastian Korda of the United States also advanced to the quarterfinals via walkover after Casper Ruud of Norway withdrew due to illness. Australia’s Alexei Popyrin defeated Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to also advance out of the round of 16.
