Grande Prairie man arrested for break and enter, and arson

Aug 31, 2024 | 2:05 PM

A break and enter at a hangar on the outskirts of Grande Prairie was the subject of arson in the afternoon of Thursday, August 29.

Plumes of black smoke were observed in the sky around 3-4 p.m. from the incident and caused major traffic delays along Range Road 63/116 Street, as police closed it for a period of time.

Mounties with the Grande Prairie detachment say they were notified of the active break and enter and when they arrived on scene they found the suspect trying to steal a snowmobile.

The suspect was not succesful in his actions and tried to run away, but was quickly arrested.

As the arrest was being made, the hangar burst into flames and several volatile accelerants inside the building caused the fire to grow and make significant damages.

The structure fire was attended to by local fire crews and was eventually put out and caused no further destruction of surrounding property.

Damages to the building and items inside have been estimated to be in the millions.

As a result of this incident, 55-year-old Daryl David Claeys of Grande Prairie has been charged with:

  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of break in tools
  • Break and enter
  • Arson

Claeys has been remanded into custody after seeing a Justice of the Peace and his next court date is on September 4, in Grande Prairie.
