GPPL hosting Queer Youth Art Showcase

Dec 4, 2024 | 3:52 PM

Local teenager’s artwork is now on display at the Grande Prairie Public Library.

Grande Prairie Composite High School’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance organized the Queer Youth Art Showcase to showcase the work of local artists and spread the message of inclusion.

Alliance co-President Daisy Nellis says the library has been very supportive of their showcase.

“Not only did we get them to come and help us figure out how we should set up our galleries here at the school for the month where it was displayed,” Nellis says. “We also got an opportunity to move our artwork there and learn how to do framing with the club, and then hang it there for about a month. Which is an opportunity that they haven’t given to any schools yet.”

She says the artwork consists of varying styles and themes.

“If the point of the club was inclusion, we also wanted to spread that message into the art showcase,” she says. “As we were making the showcase, we decided that there would be no unifying media, no theme that we were going to answer to, and just let creators express themselves in the way that they felt most comfortable and most genuine to their art and their style.”

The artwork comes from students at the Comp as well as Charles Spencer High School.

“I think it was really special for us to be able to bring together queer youth artists from all over the city and kind of give us a unifying place to hear our creativity and our love of art,” says Nellis. “And now that it’s been moved to the public library, even more of the community gets to enjoy the beautiful art that we’ve hung up.”

GPPL will be hosting the art showcase until December 19.
