Piranhas swimmer set to compete for Canada at world short course championships

Dec 9, 2024 | 3:30 PM

The World Aquatics Swimming Championships for short course pools starts Tuesday in Budapest, Hungary and a Grande Prairie Piranhas swimmer will be part of Team Canada.

Oliver Dawson was one of two rookies named to the team in September.

Dawson will compete in the heats for the men’s 200 metre breaststroke on Friday. At 16, he is seven years younger than the next-youngest competitors, and 14 years younger than the oldest in his heat.

Dawson won this same event at the Canadian Olympic trials in May and the Canadian Championships in July, where he also won the 50 metre breaststroke.

Both of those competitions are held in 50 metre pools, while the short course event will take place in a 25 metre pool.

Dawson has competed internationally for Canada before, most recently at the Junior Pan-Pacific Swimming Championships in Australia in August. He won a bronze medal in the 100 metre breaststroke and two silver medals in relay races.

Dawson’s teammates will include three swimmers who won medals for Canada at the Paris Olympics: Summer McIntosh, Kylie Masse and Ilya Kharun.

The competition in Budapest will run through Sunday.
