CP NewsAlert: Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador ready to sign Churchill Falls deal

Dec 11, 2024 | 8:43 AM

QUÉBEC — Quebec Premier François Legault and his Newfoundland and Labrador counterpart Andrew Furey are set to sign an agreement Thursday ending a long-running dispute over the Churchill Falls hydroelectric complex.

Legault confirmed that he will fly to St. John’s, N.L., later today.

About 15 per cent of Quebec’s electricity comes from the Churchill Falls power plant in Labrador through a 1969 deal set to expire in 2041 that is widely seen as lopsided in favour of Quebec.

More coming.
