Former Grande Prairie Mayor Gord Graydon passes away

Dec 19, 2024 | 11:23 AM

Flags at city facilities will fly at half mast through Saturday in memory of former Grande Mayor Gord Graydon.

Graydon died earlier this month at age 81.

City Hall says in a social media post that Graydon was a councillor from 1983 to 1992 before serving as mayor from 1992 to 2001.

Graydon left municipal politics to enter the provincial arena, serving as the Progressive Conservative MLA for GP Wapiti from 2001 to 2008. He also served as Minister of Gaming in Ralph Klein’s cabinet during his time at the legislature.

A cause of his passing was not given. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Current Mayor Jackie Clayton issued the following statement:

On behalf of City Council, I extend our condolences to the friends, family and community upon news of the passing of the Honorable Gordon Graydon.

With an impressive 18 years on City Council first as an Alderman and then as Mayor from 1992-2001, Mr. Graydon made an indelible mark on the community. It is through his efforts and championing of Grande Prairie that Muskoseepi Park was developed and exists today as a cherished landmark and gathering place.

Following his tenure on City Council, Mr. Graydon continued to represent and advocate for our community and region as the Member of Legislative Assembly for Grande Prairie-Wapiti from 2001-2008. He served as Alberta’s last Gaming Minister during this time. We’re thankful for his leadership and impact.

Mr. Graydon was a thoughtful leader, dedicated to serving his community, and providing an example for others in public service. Our thoughts are with everyone carrying on his legacy.

Flags at all City facilities are lowered to half mast until Saturday, December 21 in his honor.
