Erich Solty, beloved husband of Lois Solty (nee Berry), of Grande Prairie and surrounding area, AB, passed away in Calgary, AB, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the age of 78 years.

 

Born on October 18, 1946, Erich and his siblings grew up on the family homestead in Westmark, AB, on land his parents cleared in the 1920s. When his German immigrant parents, Horst Solty, and then Ursula Solty died, the community rallied to support the children. Special recognition goes to the Pankow family of Westmark, AB, and Erich’s foster parents, Eldon and Donna Shail, of Hythe, AB, among others, for their guidance and anchoring through these years.

 

Erich graduated from Medical School at the University of Alberta in 1973, and completed his residency in family medicine and additional surgical anesthetist training in New Zealand. He practiced in Lloydminster, AB, from 1976-1981, and then in Grande Prairie, AB, from 1981-2008. After retiring, Erich settled in Calgary, AB, in 2012, embracing his role as an involved and attentive grandfather to his five grandchildren.

 

Dr. Erich Solty was deeply devoted to his family, the friends he made throughout his life, his colleagues, and the individuals whom he had the privilege of caring for. He embodied strong values, a steadfast work ethic, and a drive to help others. Erich was known for his thoughtful care and steady presence by those who knew him. His kindness, sense of humour, and the twinkle in his eye will be deeply missed.

 

Dr. Erich Solty is survived by his spouse of 51 years, Lois, his children, Heidi (Glen) and Evan (Marni); and his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sisters, Siegi Solty and Inger Smith.

A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, in the SkyLine Lounge at the Calgary Winter Club (4611-14 St NW, Calgary, AB T2K 5Y1), from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
