Two youths taken into custody following a shooting in Grouard

High Prairie RCMP has laid multiple charges against a pair of individuals, following a firearm incident near a business in Grouard.

On Saturday, February 1, High Prairie Mounties with assistance from Faust RCMP, Lakeshore Regional Police, RCMP’s Real-Time Operation Centre, Emergency Response Team, the RCMP Containment Team, and EMS, responded to the call.

Once on the scene, officers learned three individuals interacted outside a business which led to one of them being assaulted; the individual who was assaulted and another individual then pulled out handguns, one of which was then shot at the the third individual.

The male who was shot was transported to a hospital by EMS and STARS, while the other two fled to a residence in Kapawe’No, where they were arrested without “further incidents.”

Both were taken into custody with a combined twelve charges, however, they are both underage and cannot be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

One youth had four charges laid against them:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a firearm when knowing it is unauthorized
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon with ammunition

This youth was brought before a Justice of the Peace and released with a court date set for February 24, in High Prairie.

The other youth had eight charges laid against them, as well as 23 warrants for their arrest:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Carrying concealed weapon
  • Possession of a firearm when knowing it is unauthorized
  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Possession of restricted or prohibited weapon
  • Possession of a weapon contrary to order

They were remanded into custody following an appearance before the Justice of the Peace and will have a court date on February 12.

At this time, the investigation is still ongoing and Mounties did not provide an update on the person who was shot.
