Local hockey, provincial curling for Thursday

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League playoffs continue Thursday night.

Grande Prairie will be in Spirit River for Game 1 of their best-of-seven West Division series.

The Rangers finished the regular season with 30 points, the Athletics with 18.

Valleyview is in High Prairie for Game 2 of their best-of-three East Division play-in series. The Jets lead 1-0.

Both games will start at 8:30 p.m.

The NPHL league champs will then be invited to compete at the Senior’s AA Men’s Provincials being hosted in Lethbridge, from April 3-6.

NWJHL

The Northwest Junior Hockey League playoffs started Wednesday night.

Fort St. John beat visiting Fairview 3-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their series. Game 2 Friday night in Fairview.

Also Friday, Beaverlodge will visit the County Wheat Kings for Game 1 of their series.

Both those games will start at 8 p.m.

Provincial Men’s Curling

The Alberta men’s curling championship continues in Stettler.

Kevin Koe downed Daylen Vavrek 10-7 Wednesday night, while Evan Van Amsterdam beat Daniel Humbke of Lacombe 8-7.

The Van Amsterdam team includes two curlers originally from the Peace, Jason Ginter and Sterling Middleton

The two winners of those games have both advanced to the A Event semi-finals, Koe versus Sherwood Park’s Jackson Tao and Van Amsterdam versus Calgary’s Cole Adams.

Vavrek will play Edmonton’s Ryan Jacques in a B Event game.
