Highlights from city council’s Monday meeting

Feb 11, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Besides the new census numbers, council had several other things to discuss at its meeting on Monday

Former Councillor Wally Stokes

Councillor Mike O’Connor and Mayor Jackie Clayton both paid tribute to former city councillor Wally Stokes. The two-term councillor and long-time community volunteer passed away in January at the age of 88. Stokes was involved in many community endeavours, including the Terry Fox Run and the Swan City Rotary Club. His funeral was held on February 1.

Cool Aid Society

Council approved $30,000 in funding for the Cool Aid Society. The society had gone to a city committee last week to ask for $60,000. It had lost support from another funder and said it would have to close by the end of March without more money. Since then, the local office of the United Way came forward with an offer of $30,000 if the city would also give $30,000 and approve having city staff and society officials meet to come up with a plan for more sustainable funding in the future. Council approved both ideas.

Golden Age Centre

Council approved a new 20-year operating agreement with the Golden Age Centre, one that is meant to ensure the centre continues to operate. The two had an agreement in place that was set to run until 2027, but an idea for expansion from the Golden Age Centre meant a new one was needed. Growing membership numbers mean the centre has come up with a plan to expand the current building by 3,700 square feet by adding on to the north side. Construction would most likely start in 2026 and take a year to complete. A discussion about parking needs at the centre has been referred to a city standing committee.

Council’s next meeting is set for February 24.
