Alberta Launches New Parent and Newborn Support Line

Mar 3, 2025 | 3:28 PM

Primary Care Alberta (PCA) has introduced the New Parent and Newborn Line, a new service designed to support new parents and caregivers in Alberta. By calling 811, parents will now be directed to nurses that specialize in Postpartum care and guidance.

Patricia Chambers, Executive Lead of Patient Navigation and System Integration with PCA says, “Parents often have questions related to caring for their newborn. The New Parent and Newborn Line provides expert postpartum information free of charge, to all parents in the North, South and Central zones who have a baby under two months of age.”

The new line builds on the existing Healthy Beginnings and Early Start Parent Information Lines, already offered in Calgary and Edmonton. Except, the new line allows for universal access across the province including rural access for parents with newborns.

PCA CEO Kimberley Simmonds says, “Offering virtual health services empowers Albertans to seek out their own appropriate care options without having to go to the emergency department or their primary care provider, ensuring Albertans continue to receive the right care at the right place at the right time.”

The line provides guidance on a range of topics, including baby care, breastfeeding, and both the mother and babies’ overall health.

The service is available 24/7 offering support and referrals to parents during the first two months after the baby’s birth. Albertans can reach the new line by calling 1-833-805-BABY (2229).
