Local athletes racking up accomplishments

Peace Country athletes have been busy recording some notable accomplishments lately. The following is a list by sport.

Curlers

Two teams from the Peace are playing at high school curling provincials in Brooks this weekend.

The girl’s team from Charles Spencer High School won the gold medal at zone playdowns.

The Fairview Jr./Sr. High School team got in as a wild card.

The boy’s side includes teams from Grande Cache and Mayerthorpe.

Games continue through Saturday.

Red Deer is hosting U20 provincials this weekend.

The Peter Hlushak rink, which includes Jaxon Hiebert and Varyk Doepker of Sexsmith, beat the Quinn Farmer team from Dawson Creek 9-4 on Friday.

Hlushak is now 4-1. Farmer is 0-5

Both play again Friday night.

Speed Skating

Nine members of the Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club are competing at Speed Skating Alberta’s Short

Track Speed Skating Provincials this weekend.

The competition is taking place at the Olympic Oval in Calgary and will run from Friday through Sunday

The group from Grande Prairie ranges in age from 7 to 16.

Four of them, Derian Boechler, Ola Gawlak, Autumn Munn and Chase Kravetz, also competed at the recent National Long Track Championships.

Wrestlers

Competitors from local schools brought home an armful of medals from the 2025 ASAA Rural Wrestling Championships held last weekend in Red Deer.

Gold medalists included Jaren Alaimoana and Darin Smith from the Comp. and Elizabeth Zacharias from St. Joe’s.

Hayden Cook from JP II Catholic High School and AJ Matlock from Sexsmith Secondary School both earned silver medals.

Bronze medals went to Dominic Stewart from Charles Spencer and Jason Vandermaaten from Sexsmith Secondary.

Nathan Kendal from Peace Wapiti Academy, Daxton Standing from Sexsmith Secondary, Jacob Gustafson from St. Joe’s and Keith Roteliuk from Charles Spencer also earned recognition for things like effort, grit and determination.

Swimming

Grande Prairie’s Jordan Greber and her teammates on the Arizona State University Swim Team won the Big 12 championship last weekend.

The competition was held in Federal Way, Washington.

Greber earned 52 points for her team, the second-highest total among first-year students.

She finished eighth in the 200-metre backstroke final.

Greber’s Sun Devils teammates include Canadian Olympic medal winner Ilya Kharun.

Scholars

Two Grande Prairie products recently earned scholarships to American schools.

Hockey player Trey Stephenson has signed on with the University of Jamestown Jimmies for the 2025-26 season.

The University of Jamestown is located in Fargo, North Dakota.

Stephenson is a defenceman with the Kimberly Dynamiters of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey Leaguer and is the team’s leading point-getter among blueliners.

Baseball player Hayden Willett has signed with Minnesota North College based in Hibbing, Minnesota.
