Sentencing date set in manslaughter case

Alberta Justice says a sentence will be given out April 8 in murder investigation that led to a guilty plea to manslaughter.

Carmon Ferguson of Horse Lake First Nation was charged after the death of a 47 year old Horse Lake man on October 8, 2023.

RCMP said at the time that they got a report from EMS about taking a man “injured under suspicious circumstances” to hospital.

The man later died of his injuries.

Ferguson had originally been charged with second degree murder.

Trail dates set in Grande Prairie murder

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set in a Grande Prairie murder case.

A jury trial for Nathan Landry is scheduled for March 23-April 2, 2026, in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench.

He was charged after 34 year old Brian Buchaski was found in a wooded are area of Muskoseepi Park close to Westside Park on December 4, 2023.

Landry was arrested four days later.

Jail time after drug possession guilty plea

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a drug investigation has been given jail time after pleading guilty to two charges.

Everisto Yousif of Edmonton was given a 15 month jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and resisting a peace officer during a February court appearance in Grande Prairie.

He was given 10.5 months credit for time already spent in custody.

Yousif was on arrested February 10, 2023.

Mounties said at the time that they pulled over a vehicle for a moving violation at 99 Avenue and Resources Road, which then led to a drug investigation.

The driver tried to run away while being arrested but was caught after a foot chase.

Police seized 59 bags of suspected cocaine, with a total weight of 35 grams, plus over $2400 in cash.

Time served for accused in several matters

Alberta Justice says a man accused of a long list of charges has been given a sentence of 450 days time served after pleaded guilty to several of those charges in Peace River court.

Jarret Michael Ducharme admitted to two counts of possession of property obtained by crime in one case, and possession of property obtained by crime, theft under $5000, theft a motor vehicle and forging a document.

An assault charge in a third case was withdrawn.

In September of 2023, Manning RCMP said they got a report of an attempted vehicle and fuel theft. The suspect was also linked to thefts in High Level, Fort Vermilion and Peace River.

Police tried to pull over a vehicle, but it took off. Police said they were able to identify Ducharme from surveillance video.

He was located and arrested in October in Keg River.

Man arrested after educational facility break in given time served

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a break in at an educational facility in Slave Lake in January ahs been given a sentence of 60 days time served.

Joey Martin Bigstone pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a controlled substance and shop breaking with intent in late February in Slave Lake court.

He was given a sentence of 60 days time already spent in custody.

Bigstone was arrested on January 12, 2025.

RCMP said at the time that they got a call about the break in just before 1 a.m. and found a suspect handgun in a bathroom.

Bigstone also pleaded guilty to charges of possession of stolen property under $5000, theft under $5000 and failure to comply with a release order in another case and to four charges of failure to comply in another matter. He was given 30 days time served for each.

Three people charged after shots fired investigation from Atikameg given time served

Alberta Justice says three people charged after a shots fired investigation from Atikameg have all been given time served sentences.

Kevin Wyatt Badger and Kelly Blanche Cardinal both pleaded guilty to charges that included careless use of a firearm, flight from a peace officer, possession of a firearm and in a vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle. Badger was given 120 days time served; Cardinal 60 days time already spent in custody.

Jack George Auger pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm and resisting a peace officer. He was also given 120 days time served.

They were all arrested after an incident on April 19, 2024.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time that they got a call about gunshots being fired at a home in Atikameg.

The suspects were located, a chase ensued, and the vehicle was eventually stopped by a tire deflation device.

Two suspects tried to run away but were located with the help of police dogs.

Slave Lake, Faust and Red Earth RCMP all helped in the investigation.

No one was hurt in the incident.
