Grande Prairie CRU traffic stop leads to arrests

Reneau is set to next appear in court on July 30.

Last Saturday, (May 31) Grande Prairie’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) conducted a traffic stop that led to two individuals being taken into custody.

After a vehicle was seen not operating with daytime running lights in the City, a traffic stop was conducted.

During the stop, Mounties noted unstamped tobacco, which led them to arrest the two occupants and search the vehicle.

This uncovered not only illegal contraband but a loaded handgun as well, which CRU believes was stolen.

Gordon Rawlyk, a 49-year-old resident of Grande Prairie, had six charges laid against him; he was also found to be breaching his Conditional Sentence Order:

• Careless storage of a firearm
• Unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm
• Possession of a restricted weapon in a motor vehicle
• Possession of a loaded restricted firearm
• Two counts of possession of a restricted weapon contrary to order

He was remanded into custody and appeared in court on Monday, June 2, but will be back again on June 26.

A 32-year-old Hythe resident, Justin Reneau, also had four charges laid against him:

• Careless storage of a firearm
• Unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm
• Possession of a restricted weapon in a motor vehicle
• Possession of a loaded restricted firearm

Reneau was released and will appear in court on June 9.
