Residents glad concerns about feral rabbits taken seriously by city council

Some Swanavon residents say they are glad to see the city take their concerns about feral rabbits seriously.

Two people out of about a dozen who came to the Monday city council meeting talked about concerns with ruined lawns and gardens, and rabbits digging holes that create a safety hazard.

Local Swanavon resident Wendy Kempert says she wants to see the rabbits gone.

“If you look at Canmore, Canmore has spent a lot of money, this was a couple years ago, they spent money to get rid of the rabbits but before they could do that, a disease came in and wiped the rabbits out. When you get big numbers, you’re going to have disease. “That’s potentially where we could end up and then, that disease got into the wild population, got into the wild hares.”

Kempert says her biggest issue is the digging as some of the holes are six to eight inches deep.

Kempert says there are also rabbits being found in Avondale and predicts this could become a city-wide issue.

Another Swanvon local says the rabbit issue first started when two pet rabbits were let loose, and buying repellent and repairing lawns is becoming expensive.
