County of Grande Prairie hosting free FireSmart event

Jul 11, 2025 | 12:06 PM

The County of Grande Prairie is hosting a free FireSmart event this Saturday, July 12.

Residents are invited to bring trees they’ve cut down, as well as branches, brush and deadfall, for it to be disposed of through a woodchipper.

County Fire prevention officer Kurt Schleiter says these events are a way for residents to get involved in reducing wildfire risk while learning about FireSmart principles that protect their communities.

The chipper can handle any wooden material up to 12 inches in diameter, construction woods, nails, stumps and excessively muddy material will not be accepted.

The event will also include a free barbecue, with hot dogs and refreshments courtesy of the County Regional Fire Service.

It’s happening Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm. at the Aspen Ridge Subdivision.
