A Grande Prairie local is one of the newest recipients of a medal meant to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to their community, province/territory, or region in Canada, or made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to the country.

The Salvation Army’s Captain Peter Kim received the King Charles III Coronation Medal on Monday, August 4, from Grande Prairie-Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin.

Captain Kim spoke with EverythingGP and believes it was Warkentin who nominated him.

Kim says he is honoured and humbled to receive such a medal.

“Know that this isn’t just me… it’s the whole of the people that we work together; the Salvation Army, volunteers, staff, supporters, donors, Rotarians, and a whole bunch of others that really make what we do in Grande Prairie.”

He notes it takes an entire team to have the operations and outreach like the Salvation Army does in the community.

“I just happen to be the one receiving the medal. But really… truly… it goes to the people who do the work.”

Captain Kim also received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, which he also humbly attributes to the work of others.

“I really believe this is an affirmation of the good work that the Salvation Army is doing here in the city.”

There are 30,000 of the medals, with 4,000 for members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The other 26,000 have been allocated to individuals across the nation.
