The Alberta RCMP officially have a new deputy commissioner.

On Thursday, they held a ceremony in Edmonton with staff and special guests to witness Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux take over command of the Alberta RCMP.

Daroux, who’s in his 37th year of policing, has taken over the role from Rob Hill. He now takes on the responsibility of leading the service and overseeing nearly 4,200 employees across 113 detachments.

“I’m honoured to step into the role as the commanding officer of the Alberta RCMP,” said Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux in a media release.

“Throughout my time with the RCMP, I have seen firsthand the positive impact our dedicated employees make every day. We’re not just responding to crime, we’re responding to people, and that means engaging with the communities we serve. Working hand in hand with our communities and partner agencies, I know that our collective efforts will continue to build a stronger safer Alberta, and I look forward to helping guide our employees as we move forward.”

Daroux is the 27th commanding officer of the Alberta RCMP.

In 2017, he retired from Calgary police as the deputy chief in charge of the bureau of community policing. That same year, he joined the RCMP and served as the director general of national crime prevention and Indigenous policing.

Before that, he served as the Alberta RCMP’s criminal operations officer and throughout his career, he has held a variety of operational, investigative, and administrative roles.

Daroux said he’s focused on supporting RCMP employees in Alberta by embracing new innovations and improving relationships with all Albertans through community outreach.

“Deputy Commissioner Daroux’s extensive operational experience will be a tremendous asset to Alberta and its people,” said RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme in a media release.

“He has shown a passion for working to better address the root causes of crime and social disorder and understands the importance of building trust which is central to everything we do at the RCMP. I look forward to seeing what the Alberta RCMP will achieve under Trevor’s leadership.”
