City Hall says federal funding leads to 263 new trees being planted in Grande Prairie

City Hall says 263 new trees have been planted in Grande Prairie because of funding it received under a federal program.

The $125,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Growing Canada’s Community Canopies program is funded by the federal government.

The city says in a release that the trees were planted in various places around the city in June.

Those places included sports fields, city buildings, Muskoseepi Park and boulevards.

Cottonwood, maple and bur oak were among the different species that were used.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says in that same release that “planting trees is a meaningful investment in the long-term health and livability of our city.”

“This project supports council’s strategic priorities by enhancing quality of life, strengthening our natural environment and beautifying public spaces. With the support from FCM, we’re taking thoughtful steps to grow a more resilient, welcoming community for generations to come.”

The city also says this supports its “Urban Forestry Strategy by promoting a diverse, climate-resilient canopy.”
