Fall Shedding Season
As much as we wish summer would hang on a little longer, some leaves are already changing, and your horse’s coat might be too.
While the exact timing varies by horse and breed, most horses will start shedding their summer coat in late August or September. Some horses will shed earlier than others, and the speed at which they shed can depend on factors like breed, age, and overall health.
The decrease in daylight hours is the primary trigger for shedding. As the days get shorter, horses begin to grow their thicker winter coats. Temperature fluctuations also play a role. Cooler nights can accelerate the shedding process.
If you’re planning on riding all winter, try blanketing early to help your horse avoid growing a thick, fuzzy winter coat. Greenhawk can help! They have blankets for every season and reason, along with accessories like hoods and shoulder bibs, and blanket care items like rug wash and snow proof spray.
