Heat records broke in Peace Region

Aug 27, 2025 | 9:28 AM

The mercury hit new highs in Grande Prairie and Beaverlodge on Tuesday August 26, 2025. A heatwave has taken over most of Alberta that has been unseasonably warm.

Beaverlodge experienced 31.4 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of 31 degrees set back in 1945.

Grande Prairie was the hottest though, reaching 31.9 degrees Celsius, replacing 1933’s record of 31.1 degrees.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the entirety of northern Alberta, and most of the south.

Temperatures are forecast to be between 29 and 33 degrees Celsius until next week (September 1). Overnight lows will vary vastly between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, depending on the area.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The national weather office says there are concerns that effects of the heat could build over time. They are warning residents to consider rescheduling outdoor activities to the morning or evening when it is cooler outside, take frequent breaks from the heat, stay hydrated, and check for children and/or pets before exiting your vehicle and do not leave them inside for any length of time.

Please monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion in yourself and others, which will show through high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusing, fainting, and unconsciousness.
