Sunday night fire in the Dunes West area put out by Regional Fire Service

The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service put out a vegetation fire in the Dunes West area Sunday night( Sept. 7)

Firefighters were called out around 6:30 p.m. to the area of Range Road 65 and Township Road 704.

When they arrived, they found a 30-by-50-foot area had burned. Officials say the fire had been burning for some time and reached the peat underground.

They are not sure when it started, but it had reached the peat layer underground

They add that the cause was an unattended campfire, and they want to remind people that all fires on private land require a permit, and anyone having a campfire should make sure to have water on site and make sure their campfire is out.
