Environment Canada issues special air quality statements

Sep 9, 2025 | 3:21 PM

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the City and County of Grande Prairie, MD of Greenview, Big Lakes County, Northern Sunrise County and the MD of Opportunity, among other parts of Alberta

The statement says smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

People are being asked to limit the time they spend outside.

The Peace Airshed Zone Association says the Air Quality Health Index reached nine or high at one point on Tuesday in Grande Prairie before dropping back into the moderate range.

Jasper National Park, and the Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray areas have similar statements in place.

There are currently 85 out of control wildfires burning in the Northwest Territories.

There is also a 12.5 hectare, out of control wildfire burning southwest of Grande Prairie close to the B.C boundary. There is another small out of control fire north of Township Road 750.

On the B.C. side, there is a small, out of control fire in the Chetwynd area that has burned half a hectare.
