City of Grande Prairie Council Candidate Profile: Michael Oullette

Sep 17, 2025 | 3:05 PM

Michael Oullette is one of over 20 residents running for a City Council position.

He was asked to answer the following four questions with a 600-word limit.

1. What has inspired you to run for mayor/council/school trustee in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election?

For a long time, I’ve wanted to serve on City Council, but I knew the role required 100% commitment—and now the timing is right. I have the energy, the experience, and the dedication to give back fully to this city that has given so much to me. My inspiration comes from the people of Grande Prairie, and my goal is to ensure our city continues to thrive for families, businesses, and future generations.

2. What skills or experience do you have that you feel would make you a good fit for the role?

The skills and experiences I bring to City Council begin with my ability to listen, to truly hear and understand the needs of all citizens. Not only the business community, but also homeowners, young people, and seniors across Grande Prairie.

For over 30 years, I was a business owner right here in Grande Prairie, and this city is where I raised my family. I know firsthand the challenges of building a business, supporting employees, and raising children in a growing community.

I have served as Chair of the Catholic School Board, where I gained firsthand experience with budgets, governance, and the responsibility of elected officials. I know how to stand up to government respectfully, yet firmly, on behalf of the people I represent.

As Past President of the Chamber of Commerce, I worked alongside the hard-working business community in and around Grande Prairie. These are people who invest in our city, create jobs, and give back to our region—they deserve a strong voice as our city grows into a hub for northern business.

My time as President of the Downtown Association allowed me to understand the challenges and opportunities facing small businesses.

3. What do you feel are the key or main election issues in your community, and what are the issues of priority for you?

The key issues facing Grande Prairie right now come down to balance—balancing affordability, economic growth, quality of life, and infrastructure for a growing city.

First and foremost, we must keep taxes under control. Families and businesses are already feeling the pressure of rising costs, and as your councillor I would work to ensure tax increases stay in line with the cost-of-living index. Just as importantly, residents deserve to see value for every tax dollar spent. That means clearer communication about where our money goes and how it benefits our community.

Economic development must remain a top priority. Attracting and supporting business growth ensures good jobs, investment, and stability for Grande Prairie. Our city is a hub in the north, and with a strong, forward-looking economic development plan, we can continue to grow responsibly while remaining competitive.

Quality of life is another area I am passionate about. We have excellent facilities, and past councils have done a notable job bringing events here. This summer, I volunteered with the Special Olympics, and visitors were amazed at what Grande Prairie has to offer. We should build on that success, one of my priorities is to partner with the Grande Prairie Live Theatre to develop a world-class performing arts centre that will serve residents and attract new opportunities to our city.

The best way to understand our transit system is to experience it firsthand. Over the past 60 days, I’ve made it a point to ride the bus three or four times each week. I want to recognize and thank our drivers and transit staff for their professionalism and dedication. Yes, there are challenges as our city continues to grow, but with that growth comes the opportunity to build a stronger, more responsive transit system.

4. Where can people learn more about you?

The best way to learn more about me and my commitment to Grande Prairie is to connect with me directly. I believe in being accessible and approachable, so please feel free to call or text me at 780-933-7739 or send me an email at michaeljouellette1963@gmail.com.
