A panel of provincial politicians visited the Tara Centre at Evergreen Park Wednesday, Sept. 17, to meet with locals and discuss ways to make Alberta a more sovereign province.

Over 500 people turned out for the Alberta Next town hall to hear from Premier Danielle Smith and share their thoughts on some of the issues facing Alberta.

Six questions were presented to the attendees:

  1. Should Alberta take a lead role in working with other provinces to reform federal transfers and equalization?
  2. Should Alberta create a pension plan with the same or better benefits than the Canadian Pension Plan?
  3. Should Alberta create an Alberta Police Service to take over from the RCMP?
  4. Should Alberta take a lead role in working with other provinces to pressure the federal government to amend the Canadian constitution to empower and better protect provincial rights?
  5. Should Alberta take more control of the immigration system to counter Ottawa’s open border policies?
  6. Should Alberta collect all provincial income taxes rather than having Ottawa do it?

Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Ron Wiebe attended the event and says the discussion around police in the region struck a chord with many attendees.
