Older Horses

Today on Greenhawk’s Pro Tips: caring for horses in their golden age.

Horses are typically considered “senior” after 20 years.  However, chronological age isn’t always the best indicator of their health status.   Some horses remain very active into their late twenties, whereas other horses may exhibit signs of aging earlier, in their late teens.

Senior horse care includes their food, water, shelter, weight monitoring, and appropriate blanketing.  As horses age, their ability to digest and absorb nutrients declines.  Dental problems and chronic medical conditions can also impact their ability to thrive.  In damp, cold weather, older horses burn more energy to stay warm, so adjusting their diet to include more calories is essential to maintain body condition, and they may need a blanket in the winter.

Greenhawk has a blanket for every season and need, and they also carry nutritional supplements.  Consult your veterinarian to see what’s best for your horse, and stop by Greenhawk any time for the products you need.
