GPPSD Trustee Election Candidate Profile: Lisa Petrie

Sep 26, 2025 | 11:54 AM

Lisa Petrie is one of 12 individuals running for seven Grande Prairie Public School Board Trustee vacancies.

She was asked to provide a candidate bio, or answer four questions in 600 words or less.

1. What has inspired you to run for mayor/council/school trustee in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election?

I’m running for Public School Trustee because I’m deeply concerned about the direction our schools are heading. As a parent, I believe families deserve a real voice in shaping their children’s education. Not just in policy, but in practice. I didn’t set out to run for office. But the pandemic, and everything that followed changed my perspective. It didn’t just disrupt classrooms, it exposed serious cracks in our education system. Students fell behind academically. Mental health concerns skyrocketed. And teachers were, and still are, being pushed to the brink. When schools shut down, we saw just how vital they are. Not only for learning, but for mental health, social development, and stability. And when they reopened, we were faced with the lasting impact. Learning loss, mental health struggles, and a breakdown of trust in the system. Since then, new challenges have emerged. Shifting policies, curriculum debates, concerns about inclusion, and questions about the role of parents in education. These are not easy issues- but they demand an open, honest dialogue. So I’m stepping up.To help rebuild trust, restore common sense, and bring real transparency back to our public schools. It’s time to put students first and ensure parents have a meaningful seat at the table.

2. What skills or experience do you have that you feel would make you a good fit for the role?

While I don’t come from a political background, I bring years of direct involvement in our schools through volunteering in my children’s classrooms and supporting teachers. As a self employed professional, I’ve learned how to manage time, make tough decisions, and stay accountable- skills that translate directly into effective leadership. I’ve also managed youth hockey teams, which has taught me how to lead, communicate, budget, and problem solve, often under pressure. If elected I will bring a fresh perspective grounded in common sense, and ensure the voices of the people are truly heard. I believe school boards need more everyday parents who will speak up for what matters.

3. What do you feel are the key or main election issues in your community, and what are the issues of priority for you?

I believe the key issues and biggest challenges facing our schools today include inadequate funding for both teacher and student support, overcrowded classrooms, and increasing concerns about school safety. If elected as your trustee, I will advocate for: Smaller class sizes. Increased support for our teachers. Expanded mental health resources for students. Stronger school safety measures and age appropriate books, and materials in classrooms. I’m also committed to responsible, transparent budgeting and open, honest communication with parents. Our children deserve safe, supportive and well resourced learning environments, and I will work hard to make that happen.

4. Where can people learn more about you?

The best way would be to come out and meet me in person. I will be at 9522- 97 street every Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 pm (Weather permitting) until the election. Or you can follow my Facebook page at: Lisa Petrie- Your Voice for Better Education.
