County of Grande Prairie Council Candidate Profile: Brian Grant

Oct 8, 2025 | 7:00 AM

Brian Grant is one of three Division 6 residents running for a County Council position.

He was asked to answer the following four questions with a 600-word limit.

1. What has inspired you to run for mayor/council/school trustee in the Oct. 20, 2025, municipal election?

I am a lifelong resident of our community in Division 6. Along with my wife Lori, son Morgan (Christine), and daughter Jayme we are a family deeply connected to our home and surrounding communities spending many hours of volunteer time helping to keep our community organizations thriving and preserving the rural way of life. After a successful 40+ year career its time for new chapter in my life and serving our community as a councillor is a great way to apply my skills while continuing to contribute to our area. We need some change priorities and bylaws get back to some basics in the services for residents. I see a need for a commonsense approach to development and services, and I can bring that to the table.

2. What skills or experience do you have that you feel would make you a good fit for the role?

My leadership experience is extensive. A 40+ year career in aviation transportation, personal business ventures, leadership and governance experience in many organizations and associations, and a family farm, have provided me with a host of knowledge and skills including government policy and fiscal management. While all have been a tremendous opportunity for growth and enjoyment, community leadership is the most rewarding, and at times the most challenging. There is no better feeling than working as a team to find solutions and stretch resources to build the community. These are the strengths I hope to bring to council.

3. What do you feel are the key or main election issues in your community, and what are the issues of priority for you?

Our communities face many challenges but at this time I would consider community safety and infrastructure improvements at the top. Crime has been a growing issue all around us. Theft, vandalism, drugs, violence, and more. Increased financial support for community crime prevention programs and significant improvements in response times to active crime would be a start. Intense lobbying for reforms to our justice system should a focus for all elected representatives to minimize repeat offences. Tough on crime is a pillar to a safe community! Roads and infrastructure are always key to rural life. Ensuring a balanced approach between investment in paving and the cost of maintaining gravelled surfaces is important for maximum long-term efficiency. Our communities are growing and so are our needs for acceptable winter snow removal and ice control. Allocation of resources by area size, traffic type, and volume, are important to achieve a balanced level of service for all residents. All options should be on the table, including the use of contractor services, to achieve maximum efficiencies and service improvement. Communicating a level of service plan for all residents to understand is important.
