Canadian men fall two spots to No. 28 in latest FIFA world rankings

Canada has slipped two places to No. 28 in the latest FIFA rankings after losing 1-0 to Australia and drawing Colombia 0-0.

The Canadian men fell from their career-high, overtaken by No. 26 Turkey and No. 27 Ukraine.

Spain remains No. 1 with world champion Argentina moving up one place to No. 2 at the expense of France, which fell one rung to No. 3 after a 2-2 draw at Iceland in World Cup qualifying.

England and Portugal are unchanged at No. 4 and 5. The Dutch climb one place to No. 6, leapfrogging Brazil, which falls one spot to No. 7. Belgium is unchanged at No. 8, while Italy moves up one rung to No. 9

Germany returns to the top 10, climbing two places from No. 12. Croatia falls two places to No. 11

The new rankings took into account 173 games across five continents.

No. 108 Niger, No. 144 Lesotho and the 127th-ranked Faroe Islands have all climbed nine places. Czechia, which suffered a shock loss to the Faroe Islands in World Cup qualifying, tumbled five places to No. 44.

Also moving up are Hungary (No. 37, up four), Scotland (No. 38, up five), Nigeria (No. 41, up four), Romania (No. 47, up four), Kosovo (No. 84, up seven places), Syria (No. 86, up six) and Liberia (No. 138, up six).

Sweden and Greece each fall eight places to No. 40 and 48, respectively.

Before October, the Canadians had been on the rise. They surpassed their previous high of No. 33 (set in February 2022 under former coach John Herdman after an impressive World Cup qualifying run) when they reached No. 31 in November.

Canada closed out 2024 unchanged at No. 31 before setting new marks of No. 30 in April, No. 28 in July and No. 26 in September.
