Grande Prairie’s mayor, council to be sworn in Monday

Oct 26, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Jackie Clayton says she is “excited and honoured” to be picked again to serve as mayor in Grande Prairie.

Clayton was re-elected in last Monday’s municipal election.

“I think that people really appreciated the conversations that I was having.”

“At the same time, there were conversations about the (Grade Prairie Police Service) status and people are happy to hear that we’re ahead of schedule on that and having those conversations about the work we are doing around homelessness and mental health and addictions in collaboration with many organizations and the provincial government.”

“Just because we’re engaging doesn’t mean people are getting the information that they want or in the way that they want it.”

“We need to figure that out and really be able to provide information that people (want) to access but also provide it in a way that suits multiple platforms and formats.”

Clayton says the city also needs to “look at emerging economic opportunities and really push on that strategic growth piece.”

She adds council will need to have what she calls a “difficult conversation” on city services

“as the cost of them continues to increase.”

There are many city services that are non-negotiables, right? I would assume council still wants to fill potholes and remove snow. Those are priorities and, obviously, public safety is a priority.”

“There are things, maybe, that through those difficult financial conversations that we need to revisit.”

Clayton says she is encouraging people to “stay involved, to get accurate information, and also to get out and volunteer and support your community.”

“Spending time behind a keyboard, talking about information that may be not accurate, is doing nothing for your community.”

Clayton says she is thankful for the volunteers and donors who supported her campaign and the people who voted for her.

She and the eight people who will serve on council will be sworn in at the organizational meeting today (Monday, October 27).
