Grande Prairie Police Service to be the first in Canada to use new record-keeping system

Dec 3, 2025 | 6:00 AM

The transition towards the Grande Prairie Police Service took an important step ahead at the most recent council meeting.

Council approved moving just over $643,000 to the police operating budget to complete the purchase of a new Record Management System.

Police Commission chair Dan Wong explains the importance of this system.

“The Record Management System is the system that keeps track of all the police investigations and the evidence and all of that. so they need that system in order to become police of jurisdiction for October of 2026.”

Council also approved entering into a 10-year contract with Axon to provide the system. The total cost is expected to be a little over $9.5 million over the 10 years.

Superintendent Greg Redl says the police service will be “leading the country with a brand new system.”

“When I say brand new, I don’t mean that to say that it is untested. It is deployed at a number of locations within the United States, so we’ll simply be the first Canadian deployment, and we’re working with them to really Canadianize the system and make sure that it’s set up for Canadian law enforcement and the Canadian legal system.”

Redl adds that it is exciting for the service to have a first in the country like this.

“We are excited about it. We already have a partnership with Axon with respect to our body-worn cameras and our conducted energy weapons.”

“We have that good relationship there, and we find that they are very supportive of us. They are very easy to work with, and we’re looking forward to this new project with them.”

Redl says the system that works with body cameras will tie in with the record management system. He adds that having everything stored in one place will make it easier not only to keep records but also to get packages ready for court cases.
