Grande Prairie horseman wins award at Agribition that is rarely given out

A Grande Prairie horseman has won an accolade at Canada’s biggest agriculture show that isn’t given out very often.

Gordon Frentz won the 2025 Top Teamster of the Year at the Chore Team Competition at the Canadian Western Agribition held in Regina.

The award recognizes horsemanship, along with care for and handling of his horses.

Frentz says he took a team of three-year-olds that he started breaking in January.

“I felt pretty confident with them, so I took them to Regina.”

“In the competition, when the loudspeakers started blaring, they got a little excited and kind of danced around and stepped on a line, and so, I lost some points there, hooking up to the wagon and stone boat.”

Frentz says the team drove well once they got going.

He adds, “it’s pretty amazing” to win this award.

“There were 16 teamsters there.”

“The judges awarded this award. It was the judges at the Chore Team event that chose to give this award to me, so that’s pretty special, I guess.”

Frentz says his team are named Millie and Mollie and are three-year-old Haflingers.

Frentz did not finish in the top six this year after finishing third last year with his other team.

“In hindsight, maybe I should have taken the other team because they’re used to the bright lights and things that go on, being that they’re 10 and 11 years old, where these are just babies.”

“But they did really good. They drove really good, once I got them hooked up. They were just a little antsy when the speakers started talking.”

Frentz says he is not planning to return to Agribition next year, but adds he might if things change.
