Inclusion Grande Prairie hoping for policy from city hall on recreation for people with intellectual disabilities

Inclusion Grande Prairie is pushing to see some policies about recreation for people with intellectual disabilities from City Hall

Council asked administration to prepare a report to include what is available, what isn’t, and possible cost implications and bring it back to a committee meeting.

President Keith Moore says his group has helped train summer staff.

“To understand inclusive recreation, what it means, how to speak about it, and how to talk to people with disabilities.”

“That’s been positive, but it depends on the individuals. As they move on, we start over.”

Moore says Inclusion Grande Prairie feels the city needs a policy that outlines what inclusive recreation means and “what the commitments are.”

Moore adds, the city has been receptive, but there is no policy in place.

“Is there something there that the city will promote on their own? Or can we link up the city with other advocacy groups around the province or the country to help them maintain their inclusive lifestyles?”

He adds, some people have been having issues.

“An example where a support worker with an individual with disabilities was told they weren’t able to use the facilities. They had to stay within two or three feet of their client, which is not normal.”

“I mean, if you went to work out at the Eastlink Centre, you wouldn’t expect somebody you brought with you to stand beside you the whole time you were on a treadmill or whatever it may be.”

Moore was part of a delegation from Inclusion Alberta that spoke to city council at its meeting on Dec. 8, 2025.
