Eight-point burst earns GP-born forward WHL Player of the Week

Jan 6, 2026 | 1:46 PM

Grande Prairie-born forward Lukas Sawchyn was awarded WHL Player of the Week honours for his holiday stretch.

Over the course of three games, from Dec, 29 till Jan 4, Sawchyn posted eight points with two goals, helping the Edmonton Oil Kings go undefeated over the stretch.

With that offensive outburst, Sawchyn now sits 7th in league scoring with 50, only four points behind fellow Oil King and World Junior silver medalist Miroslav Holinka, who sits in fourth.

The Oil Kings also recently made a move, sending Joe Iginla to the Vancouver Giants for forward Aaron Obobaifo, who already has 26 points on the year, and played with Sawchyn during their time at Shattuck St. Mary’s; setting Sawchyn and company up for a big second half of the season.

Currently, the Oil Kings are third in the Eastern Conference and are fourth in league points with a 26-7-3 record.
