Officer-involved stabbing triggers County police presence

Jan 7, 2026 | 6:56 AM

Grande Prairie Rural RCMP are updating residents on yesterday’s (Tuesday, Jan. 6) police presence in the County.

RCMP say they were responding to a call of a single-vehicle collision near the corner of Township Road 750 and Range Road 51 at around 2:15 p.m.

Reports to the RCMP indicated the motorist was allegedly driving quickly and erratically before fleeing the scene on foot.

At 3 p.m, RCMP say when they arrived at the scene, an altercation ensued between an officer and the driver.

This resulted in the officer being stabbed by the driver; the officer also discharged his firearm, hitting the suspect.

Both were taken to a hospital and expected to recover, and a police presence remained in place throughout the night.

At this time, RCMP has not confirmed if an arrest was made or provided any names or a list of pending charges.

Now, Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will conduct their own investigation into the incident.
